The history of the official, ceremonial opening of the first Maritime School in the reborn Republic of Poland dates back to December 8, 1920. On that day, in Tczew, on the mast of the former Girls' High School building, a white and red flag was ceremoniously raised, symbolizing the reborn statehood. The school inaugurated its activities at two faculties - Navigation and Mechanics.

Currently, the Maritime University in Gdynia consists of four dynamically developing faculties: Navigation, Mechanics, Electrical Engineering, and Management and Quality Sciences. These faculties offer nine fields of study within 42 specializations, and all of them have the right to award doctorates.

The university currently educates over 3.6 thousand students, of whom 28.7% are women and 3.9% are foreigners. Last academic year, 741 graduates left the university building. In the academic year 2024/2025, over 1.6 thousand students began their studies. male and female students, including 80 foreigners.

The employment structure at the university includes 318 full-time academic teachers, of whom 41.5% are women.

Outstanding graduates of the Maritime University in Gdynia include: Witold Poinc – captain of large shipping, co-founder of the Polish Ship Rescue Service; Paweł Baranowski – Polish poet, mountain and kayaking guide; Bogdan Kołodziejski – journalist, traveller, reporter, author of documentaries and television reports; and Dorota Irvina Arciszewska-Mielewczyk – politician, member of the Sejm of the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 10th term, senator of the 6th and 7th term.
