The Medical Academy in Szczecin was established on March 20, 1948 as the third university in the city. At that time, only the fourth year of studies was launched, for which 60 candidates applied — many of whom later became outstanding scientists and educators. In 1992, the university was named the Pomeranian Medical Academy in Szczecin, and on August 21, 2010, it was transformed into the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. Currently, fourteen fields of study are taught at four faculties of the PUM. The university maintains scientific contacts with renowned foreign centers, including in the USA, Germany, Italy and Sweden. Among the special achievements, we can mention research in the field of genetics and cancer pathology, as well as on stem cells. In the field of clinical medicine, procedures in the field of invasive cardiology, transplantology, hand surgery and gastroenterology stand out. The Pomeranian Medical University provides professional medical services in two clinical hospitals: SPSK No. 1 with the hospital in Police and SPSK No. 2. Currently, the university has over 5.4 thousand students, of whom 75.1% are women, and 10.2% are foreigners from nearly 30 countries, including most from Germany, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Last year, the university graduated over 1.1 thousand students. In the academic year 2024/2025, 1.4 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 114 foreigners. The university employs 477 full-time academic teachers, of whom 65.2% are women. The Pomeranian Medical University can boast of graduates such as Bartosz Adam Arłukowicz - politician and pediatrician, and Tomasz Grodzki - physician, surgeon, professor of medical sciences, senator and Marshal of the Senate of the 10th term.
