The university was established in 1948 as the Medical Academy, initially with one medical faculty and a dental department, based in Rokitnica Bytomska. In 1949, its name was changed to the Silesian Medical Academy, and then to the Silesian Medical Academy named after Ludwik Waryński. Currently, the university educates medical doctors, dentists, pharmacists, medical analysts, biotechnologists and specialists in the fields of public health, emergency medicine, dietetics, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, cosmetology, neurobiology and medical coaching. In addition to full-time studies, the Silesian Medical University in Katowice also offers part-time studies (evening and extramural). As part of postgraduate training, doctoral studies are conducted, both full-time and part-time, as well as training and specialization courses. The university has a Doctoral School and conducts doctoral studies. The university has over 200 scientific groups, student and doctoral organizations, associations and sports sections. The university cooperates with dozens of foreign educational institutions, including those from Great Britain, Italy, Sweden and the United States. Currently, the university has over 10.1 thousand students, of whom 74.2 percent are women and 5.1 percent are foreigners. Last academic year, the university educated over 2.2 thousand graduates. For the academic year 2024/2025, over 2.9 thousand male and female students were registered, including 93 foreigners. The university employs 1,396 full-time academic teachers, of whom 60.1 percent are women. The Silesian Medical University in Katowice can boast, among others, its graduate Andrzej Sośnierz - a politician and doctor.
