The Medical Academy in Gdańsk was established on 8 October 1945. Its history dates back to centuries of medical traditions in Gdańsk, which date back to the activities of the Guild of Surgeons, which existed since 1454. Medical and natural science teaching and research also developed in the city, especially within the Gdańsk Academic Gymnasium (Atheneum Gedanense), founded in 1558. Currently, the Medical University of Gdańsk (GUMed) is a modern academic centre, recognisable on the national and international stage. For over 70 years, it has provided high quality education in all medical professions and conducted scientific research at the highest world level. Scientists from the university have achieved success in fields such as oncology, genetics, testing of modern drugs or the use of biomaterials, which are used in the creation of modern bone implants. They also deal with epidemiology, modelling heart diseases and pediatric oncology. Currently, over 6.700 thousand students study at GUMed, of whom 74 percent are women and 11.7 percent are foreigners. Last year, the university educated 1.25 thousand graduates. In the academic year 2024/2025, over 1.7 thousand male and female students started their studies, including 106 foreigners. The university employs 940 full-time academic teachers, of whom 61.3 percent are women. The Medical University of Gdańsk can boast of outstanding graduates, such as Anna Dominiczak - Royal Professor of Medicine (Internal Medicine) at the University of Glasgow, Vice-Rector of the University of Glasgow and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow (2010-2020). Specialist in internal medicine, hypertension and endocrinology, honorary medical consultant and member of the NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Council. Another outstanding graduate is Marek Balicki – a medical specialist in the field of anesthesiology and psychiatry, politician, long-time member of parliament and two-time Minister of Health, serving as advisor to the President of the Republic of Poland in 1998–2001.
