The Poznań Academy of Physical Education is the oldest sports university in Poland. The process of educating physical education staff began here in 1919 in the Piast University, later the University of Poznań, in the Department of School Hygiene and Theory of Physical Education. In 1924, this unit was transformed into the Physical Education Studies, and after World War II, the university was transformed into the Higher School of Physical Education, and then into the Academy of Physical Education in 1973. Currently, the university offers education in eight fields: Physical Education, Sport, Tourism and Recreation, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Dance in Physical Culture, Animation of People 50+ and Neurobiology. The campus located in the center of Poznań offers a modern and comprehensive teaching and sports base. The university has over 2.75 thousand students, of whom 53.9% are women and 1.6% are foreigners. Last year there were 609 graduates, while in the academic year 2024/2025 1269 male and female students started their studies, including 27 foreigners. There are 201 full-time academic teachers employed, of whom over half (57.2%) are women. Among the university's graduates are outstanding figures such as Zdobysław Stawczyk and Eugeniusz Wachowski, medalists of the academic world championships in athletics, and Olympic gold medalists in athletics: Bronisław Malinowski, Władysław Komara, Tadeusz Ślusarski, Władysław Kozakiewicz. The university also educated outstanding wrestlers such as Andrzej Wroński, Ryszard Wolny, Włodzimierz Zawadzki, as well as rowers Tomasz Kucharski and Michał Jeliński.
