The establishment of the Krakow Academy of Physical Education is associated with the establishment of a two-year Scientific Course for Candidates for Gymnastics Teachers in Secondary Schools and Teacher Training Colleges at the Jagiellonian University in 1893. This course was conducted near the Faculty of Medicine of the Jagiellonian University. In 1913, it was transformed into a two-year Physical Education College, which, in addition to educating teachers, organized lectures and practical exercises for all university students. It was the first institution of this type for university education of physical education teachers in Poland. Currently, education at the university takes place within three faculties in 14 fields of study. Since 1988, doctoral studies have also been conducted, and since 2020, a Doctoral School has been operating. The university has nearly 3.7 thousand students, of whom 60.2% are women and 1.4% are foreigners. Last academic year, the university graduated 1,016 times. In the academic year 2024/2025, 1,749 male and female students began their studies, including 232 foreigners. The employment structure at the university includes 277 full-time academic teachers, of whom 56.3% are women. Among the university's graduates are Agnieszka Radwańska - tennis player, Maciej Sikoński - MMA fighter, karateka and kick-boxer, and Stefan Hula - ski jumper.
