The tradition of educating physical education teachers and instructors of various sports disciplines in Katowice dates back to 1952, when the Physical Education Technical School was established. In 1957, the technical school was transformed into the Physical Education Teacher Training College. In 1970, the College of Physical Education in Katowice emerged from this college. Currently, the university runs a Doctoral School in the field of physical culture sciences and offers twelve first- and second-cycle degree programs, as well as uniform master's studies. These include: physical education, physiotherapy, management, tourism and recreation, internal security, physical activity in public health, sport, personal trainer with sports dietetics and physiotherapy foreigners. The university also offers postgraduate studies in various profiles and additional training courses. Currently, the university 2995 students, of whom 45.4% are women and 0.9% are foreigners. Last academic year, 607 graduates left the university. In the academic year 2024/2025, over 1,300 male and female students began their studies, including 16 foreigners. The university employs 2,225 full-time academic teachers, of whom 48.6% are women. Graduates of the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice include Justyna Kowalczyk — cross-country skier, Olympic champion and two-time World Cup winner, and Artur Rojek — vocalist and composer, frontman of the band Myslovitz.
