The beginnings of the Jędrzej Śniadecki Academy of Physical Education and Sport in Gdańsk date back to 1952, when the Physical Education Technical School was established. Shortly afterwards, in 1957, the Physical Education Teacher Training School was established to accompany the institution. However, it was not until 1969, pursuant to the Regulation of the Ministers of 6 August, that the university obtained the status of the Higher School of Physical Education, which opened up new opportunities for both didactic and scientific development. In 1973, the university adopted the name of the outstanding Enlightenment philosopher – Jędrzej Śniadecki, who remains its patron to this day. Currently, the university offers 30 specializations in 12 fields of study. It has 5 outdoor sports fields, 12 sports halls, 2 sports halls and 1 swimming pool. The university educates almost 2.8 thousand students. students, of whom 52.6% are women and 4.5% are foreigners. Last year, there were 462 graduates of the university. In the academic year 2024/2025, 1,236 male and female students began their studies, including 64 foreigners. The university employs 157 full-time academic teachers, of whom over half (51.6%) are women. Among the university graduates are well-known sports figures, such as Sylwia Gruchała (fencing), Henryk Rozmiarek (handball), Paweł Baraszkiewicz (kayaking), Przemysław Miarczyński (sailing), Aneta Szczepańska (judo) and Adam Korol (rowing).
