On May 25, 1925, the state authorities established a higher education institution, which was named the Higher School of Commerce (WSH). The first ceremonial inauguration of the academic year took place on October 1, 1925, which is considered the official beginning of today's University of Economics in Kraków. At first, the university offered three-year, and later also four-year studies in various fields. The lecturers were mainly professors of the Jagiellonian University and the Mining Academy (currently the AGH University of Science and Technology). On September 1, 1938, the Higher School of Commerce was included among the academic schools and was named the Academy of Commerce.

Currently, the university offers a wide range of education, including full-time and part-time studies at the first-cycle level (bachelor's, engineering), second-cycle (master's), uniform master's (e.g. law), as well as doctoral, postgraduate and MBA studies. Recruitment is conducted for over 30 fields, enriched with numerous specializations.

As of Today, there are almost 16.3 thousand students studying at the university, of which 59.1% are women and 6.5% are foreigners. Last academic year, almost 3.9 thousand graduates left the university. In the academic year 2024/2025, over 7.5 thousand male and female students started their studies, including 503 foreigners.

The employment structure at the university includes 770 full-time academic teachers, of which almost half are women. Among the outstanding graduates of the university are: Rafał Brzoska - President of the Management Board of InPost, Tadeusz Ferenc - President of Rzeszów since 2002, Member of Parliament of the 4th term, Adam Góral - President of Asseco Poland, Prof. Dr. Hab. Jerzy Hausner - former Minister of Labor and Social Policy (2001-2003), Minister of Economy, Labor and Social Policy (2003-2004), as well as Deputy Prime Minister and member of the Monetary Policy Council since 2010. Other distinguished graduates include Roman Kluska - founder of the Optimus company, Dr. Aleksander Miszalski - Mayor of the City of Kraków, Dariusz Orłowski - President of the Management Board of Wawel, Sobiesław Zasada - sportsman and businessman, founder of the Zasada Group, and Rafał Ziobro - the first Pole and ninth in the world to swim across the Strait of Magellan, as well as the first Pole to swim across the Strait of Gibraltar.
