The University of Economics in Katowice is one of the oldest universities in Upper Silesia. It was established in December 1936, and the first inauguration of the academic year took place on January 11, 1937, when dozens of students began studying at the Department of Industrial Organization. The university is one of five state universities of economics in the country and the largest in the region educating in social and economic sciences. There are currently more than 8,000 students at the University of Economics in Katowice, 54.9% of whom are women and 2.5% are foreigners. Last year, the university produced 2192 graduates. In the 2024/2025 academic year, 4053 male and female students, including 97 foreigners, began their studies. The university employs 446 academic staff, 61.2% of whom are women. Among the university's graduates are Teresa Mokrysz - entrepreneur and co-owner of the Mokate company; Hanna Greń - writer and author of detective novels; Prof. Dr. Andrzej Klasik - honorary rector of the Karol Godula Upper Silesian Academy of Entrepreneurship in Chorzow; and Szymon Michalek - Mayor of Chorzow.
