The university with a 50-year tradition, founded in 1969 in Siedlce as the Higher School of Teachers, has from the beginning played an important role in the education of teachers and specialists. Over time, its mission evolved, transforming successively into the Higher School of Pedagogy and then into the Higher School of Agriculture and Pedagogy. On October 1, 1999, the university adopted its current name - Podlaska Academy.

Currently, the university operates five faculties: Agrobioengineering and Animal Sciences, Humanities, Medical and Health Sciences, Social Sciences, and Science and Life Sciences. The educational offerings include nearly 40 majors, covering both general and practical profiles. English-language studies are also available in three second-level majors - mathematics, national security and management.

The university also provides doctoral education and a Doctoral School, in six disciplines: biological sciences, chemical sciences, history, security sciences, agriculture and horticulture, zootechnics and fisheries. It is a pioneer in Poland, being the first university to introduce inclusive education for students with disabilities.

The university currently has nearly 4,500 students, 65.3% of whom are women and 4.6% are foreigners. Last academic year, it graduated 1,250 undergraduates. For the 2024/2025 academic year, 2073 male and female students, including 76 foreigners, have begun their studies. The teaching staff structure includes 370 academic teachers, 56.5% of whom are women.

The university boasts outstanding graduates, such as Zdzislaw Ćmoch - publicist, poet, painter, historian-regionalist and social activist; Ryszard Mićko - civil servant and local government official, from 2011 to 2015 Deputy Governor of West Pomerania; Marek Sawicki - politician and agricultural engineer, MP for the Sejm; and Leszek Surawski - retired Polish Army general, serving as Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army from 2017 to 2018.
