Poznan University of Technology has been operating under its current name since 1955, although its origins date back to 1919, when the single-faculty State Machine Building College was established. Ten years later, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering was established, which resulted in the university's name being changed to the State Higher School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. In the beginning, studies lasted three years. Today, Poznan University of Technology is one of the leading technical universities in Poland. It educates at nine faculties, offering 34 fields of study at the undergraduate, engineering, master's, postgraduate and doctoral levels. The university has more than 14,000 students, 29.8% of whom are women, and 5.2% are foreigners. Last year, the university produced more than 3,800 graduates. In the 2024/2025 academic year, more than 5,000 male and female students began their studies, including 213 foreigners. The Polytechnic's employment structure includes 1186 full-time academic staff, 34.7% of whom are women. Prominent graduates of the university include Aleksander Doba, a kayaker and traveler; Jerzy Wisniewski, an entrepreneur and founder of the PBG group and Rafako, one of the largest Polish groups in the energy construction industry; and Waldemar Witkowski, a politician.
