The Silesian University of Technology is the oldest technical university in Upper Silesia and one of the largest in the country. It was established in 1945 as a scientific and didactic base for the most industrialized region in Poland, Upper Silesia, which is also one of the most industrialized areas in Europe. The university plays an important role in the public life of the region, performing cultural and opinion-forming functions. Currently, the Silesian University of Technology operates within 15 organizational units - 13 faculties and 2 institutes. More than 60 specialties are studied at its faculties, covering a wide range of engineering activities. In addition to technical majors, the university also offers studies in business analytics, interior design, mathematics, sociology, management, project management, applied linguistics and pre-school and early childhood pedagogy. There are more than 16,400 male and female students at the Silesian University of Technology, of whom 29.4% are women and 6.7% are foreigners. Last academic year, the university produced nearly 4.4 thousand graduates. In the 2024/2025 academic year, nearly 5.6 thousand students began their studies, including 104 foreigners. The university's structure employs 1,592 academics, 35.4% of whom are women. Prominent graduates of the Silesian University of Technology include Jerzy Buzek - Member of Parliament for the third term, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland in 1997-2001, former Member of the European Parliament and its President.
