The university was established in 1899 by a decision of Kaiser Wilhelm II, and officially opened in 1904 as the Royal Technical University of Gdansk. It is one of the oldest autonomous state universities in Poland and the oldest polytechnic on the present territory of the Republic of Poland. Gdansk University of Technology consists of 8 faculties, where you can study 40 different majors. The university offers engineering and master's degrees, implemented in full-time and part-time systems. In addition, it has 98 scientific circles and student organizations. There are currently more than 14,000 students at Gdansk University of Technology, 36.4% of whom are women, and 6.1% are foreigners from more than 60 countries. Last academic year, the university educated nearly 3,000 graduates. For the 2024/2025 academic year, more than 5,500 male and female students have started their studies, including 191 foreigners. The university's structure employs 1145 full-time academic staff, 37.1% of whom are women. Prominent alumni and lecturers of the university include Jan Ryszard Kurylczyk, writer, politician; Rudi Schuberth, singer and satirist; and Ryszard Krauze, entrepreneur, one of the richest Poles.
