The University of Rzeszow - the largest university in the Subcarpathian region - began operations on September 1, 2001, under an act of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland of June 7, 2001. Although it is one of the younger Polish universities, it continues rich academic traditions dating back to earlier institutions. The university was formed from the merger of the Higher School of Pedagogy in Rzeszow, whose origins date back to 1963, a branch of the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin (established in 1969) and the Faculty of Economics in Rzeszow of the Hugo Kołłątaj Agricultural Academy in Cracow (in existence since 1973). Currently, the University of Rzeszow offers 68 fields of study. The university has more than 15,000 students, 68.7% of whom are women, and 2.3% are foreigners. Last year, 4023 graduates left the university. In the 2024/2025 academic year, 6360 male and female students began their studies, including 134 foreigners. The university's structure employs 1233 academic teachers, 54.7% of whom are women. Among the graduates of the University of Rzeszow are prominent individuals such as Zenon Brzuszko - military officer, Major General of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland, doctor of social sciences; Jerzy Ferdynand Adamski - regional historian, publicist, sightseeing expert, social activist and local government activist; Marek Antosz - poet, novelist, journalist and teacher; and Kortez, owner of Łukasz Federkiewicz - musician, composer, vocalist, guitarist, pianist and trombonist.
