The University of Wrocław is one of the oldest universities in Central Europe, founded in 1702. For many years, it has held a leading position in the ranking of the most important and prestigious universities in Poland. The university's goal is to continue the tradition of Polish universities in Vilnius and Lviv and to combine the historical heritage of Silesia with Austrian, Prussian, Czech and native cultures. The University of Wrocław consists of 10 faculties of sciences and offers over 70 fields of study, to which new programs are regularly added. In addition to bachelor's and master's studies, the university offers postgraduate studies and English-language programs for foreigners. Currently, the university educates over 20,000 students, of whom 67.3% are women and 7.6% are foreigners. Last year, the university produced over 5,000 graduates. In the academic year 2024/2025, over 9.1 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 674 foreigners. The University of Wrocław employs 1,914 full-time academic teachers, of whom 50.6% are women. Among the university's distinguished graduates are: Barbara Piasecka-Johnson — Polish-American art historian and entrepreneur, Clara Immerwahr — German chemist and wife of Fritz Haber, Edith Stein — German-speaking philosopher, convert from Judaism, Carmelite nun and saint, Elżbieta Witek — politician and teacher, Wojciech Korfanty — political leader, and Władysław Stasiak — politician and local government official.
