The University of Silesia in Katowice was founded in 1968 as the ninth university in Poland. Although the main seat of the university authorities and most of the teaching units are located in Katowice, other faculties and teaching units are also located in other cities of the Silesian province, such as Cieszyn, Chorzów and Sosnowiec. The University of Silesia actively cooperates with foreign universities in the field of scientific research and student exchange, having signed 250 international agreements. Currently, the university offers education in 79 fields of study and about 240 specializations, conducted in full-time and part-time form at the level of first and second cycle studies and uniform master's studies. Fields of study include the fields of humanities, social sciences, exact and natural sciences, engineering and technology, theology and art. Since 1983, the University of the Third Age has also been operating at the University of Silesia. Currently, there are nearly 18,000 students studying at the university, of which 66.3% are women and 4.4% are foreigners. Last academic year, the university educated over 4.5 thousand graduates. In the academic year 2024/2025, over 7 thousand male and female students started their studies, including 303 foreigners. The University of Silesia employs 1,712 full-time academic teachers, of which almost 57.1% are women. The most recognizable graduates of the university include, among others, the Minister of Sport Witold Bańka, the President of the Regional Chamber of Commerce in Katowice Tadeusz Donocik, the journalist Anita Gargas, the writers Wojciech Kuczok and Szczepan Twardoch, the satirist Michał Ogórek, the singer Renata Przemyk and the sports journalist Andrzej Zydorowicz.
