The University of Szczecin was established by the act of the Sejm of July 1984 as a result of the merger of the Faculty of Transport Engineering and Economics of the Szczecin University of Technology and the Higher School of Pedagogy. It began its activity in the academic year 1985/86, dynamically developing the post-war academic tradition and fulfilling an important culture-forming function in the city and region. Currently, the university offers about 80 fields of study, conducted in the full-time and part-time system. Students actively participate in the work of 160 scientific groups and publish their own journals. The university is home to, among others: an academic theatre, a choir, the Student Culture Zone, the Academic Sports Association, NZS, AIESEC and ELSA. The university has over 10 thousand students, of whom 64.4% are women and 6% are foreigners. Last academic year, over 2.1 thousand graduates graduated from it. In the academic year 2024/2025, 4.5 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 277 foreigners. The University employs 966 full-time academic teachers, of whom over 55.1% are women. The graduates of the University of Szczecin include: Joachim Brudziński — politician and political scientist, Sławomir Nitras — politician and political scientist, Krzysztof Łukaszewicz — film director and screenwriter, Jolanta Kiełpińska — geneticist.
