The university was established in 1945, continuing the legacy of several higher education institutions from the interwar period, such as the Łódź Teacher Training Institute, the Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences, and the Free Polish University. At the beginning of its operation, the University of Łódź (UŁ) had three faculties: humanities, law and economics, and mathematics and natural sciences. It is currently one of the largest Polish higher education institutions, offering education at 12 faculties and at the Branch in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. Students have access to over 100 fields of study, 50 postgraduate and MBA courses, and 4 doctoral schools. UŁ also includes institutions such as a publishing house, a kindergarten, a high school, the British International School of the University of Łódź, and the Polish Language School for Foreigners. Currently, over 23,200 students study at the university. students, of whom 61% are women, and 8.4% are foreigners from almost all over the world, including Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, India, China, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. Last year, almost 5.7 thousand graduates received their diplomas from the university. In the academic year 2024/2025, over 10 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 658 foreigners. The university employs 2,048 full-time academic teachers, of whom 56.3% are women. Among the university's outstanding graduates are, among others, Aleksander Gudzowaty - one of the richest Poles, the main shareholder of the Bartimpex company; Anita Werner - a television journalist; Leszek Kołakowski - a philosopher, prose writer, publicist and essayist; Marek Belka - a politician, former Minister of Finance and Prime Minister of Poland; and Tatiana Okupnik - a singer.
