By virtue of the royal privilege of Sigismund III Vasa of 28 October 1611, the Jesuit College was recognized as the first university in Poznań. This privilege was confirmed by King John Casimir in 1650 and by King John III Sobieski in 1678. On the basis of these documents, academic degrees such as master's and doctorates were awarded in Poznań. It was not until 7 May 1919, 308 years after the formal establishment of the university by the Polish king, that the ceremonial inauguration of the first academic year of the newly established Piast University, the initial name of the University of Poznań, took place in Poznań. Currently, the university offers studies in 141 fields and over sixty specializations. Almost 1,200 doctoral students are studying in doctoral studies and at the Doctoral School of Adam Mickiewicz University. UAM is one of ten research universities in Poland, which means implementing additional tasks aimed at the development of scientific research and its internationalization. The university currently has over 28,000 students, of whom 68.9% are women, and 7.1% are foreigners from various countries, including Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, India, China, Azerbaijan, the USA, Norway, and the UK. Last academic year, nearly 6.3 thousand graduates left the university. In the academic year 2024/2025, over 12.5 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 911 foreigners. The university employs 2,677 full-time academic teachers, of whom almost half (50.2%) are women. Among the university's outstanding graduates are, among others, Hanna Suchocka - lawyer and politician, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland; Jan Kulczyk - entrepreneur, one of the richest Poles in his lifetime; Jan Nowak-Jeziorański - politician, writer, publicist, soldier of the Home Army; Omenaa Mensah — journalist and TV presenter; Roman Giertych — politician and lawyer; and Stanisław Barańczak — poet, translator and literary critic.
