The University of Gdańsk was established in 1970 as a result of the merger of the Higher School of Economics in Sopot and the Higher School of Pedagogy in Gdańsk. Later, the University was joined by the Higher Teacher Training College. Currently, it is the largest university in the Pomeranian region, offering studies at eleven faculties in fields such as biology, biotechnology, chemistry, oceanography, quantum physics, pedagogy, psychology, law and economics.

 

The University of Gdańsk enjoys significant scientific achievements, especially in the field of research related to the sea, cooperating with research centers from almost all countries of the world. The greatest successes are achieved by researchers in the field of biomedicine, biomolecular research and theoretical foundations of quantum technologies.

 

Currently, the university has almost 20 thousand students, of whom 66.7% are women, and 2.8% are foreigners from various countries, including Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, India, China, Azerbaijan, the USA, Norway and the UK.

 

Last year, the university educated nearly 5,000 graduates. In the academic year 2024/2025, over 9.7 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 257 foreigners. The university employs 1,712 full-time academic teachers, of whom 56.1% are women.

 

Outstanding graduates of the University of Gdańsk include Aleksander Kwaśniewski - President of the Republic of Poland, Aneta Kręglicka - Polish photo model and Miss World 1989, Grzegorz Skawiński - Polish vocalist, guitarist and composer, and Maria Kaczyńska - First Lady in 2005-2010, wife of President Lech Kaczyński.
