The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn was established in 1999 as a continuation of the tradition of three higher schools: the M. Oczapowski Academy of Agriculture and Technology in Olsztyn, the Higher School of Pedagogy in Olsztyn and the Warmia Institute of Theology. It is an autonomous university, the structure of which is formed by 15 faculties, the School of Public Health and the Branch in Ełk. Almost 16.3 thousand students study at the University, of which 61.1% are women and 2.7% are foreigners. The educational offer includes almost 80 fields of study and over 200 specializations, and scientific activity is supported by about 220 scientific groups.

The University enables education in third-cycle studies (doctoral) for people with a master's degree, master of engineering, medical doctor, veterinary surgeon or other equivalent, in fields such as biological, economic, humanistic, medical, legal, agricultural, social, technical, theological and veterinary sciences.

Last year, the university produced 3,890 graduates. In the academic year 2024/2025, nearly 6.5 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 110 foreigners. The employment structure at the University includes 1,550 full-time academic teachers, of whom over 52.8% are women.

The University of Warmia and Mazury can boast of graduates who hold important public and social positions. Among them are politicians currently in power in Warmia and Mazury, such as Marshal Gustaw Marek Brzezin, Voivode Artur Chojecki and the President of Olsztyn Piotr Grzymowicz. The university has also educated representatives of parliament, including Iwona Arent, Zbigniew Babalski, Janusz Cichoń, Monika Falej, Wojciech Kossakowski, Paweł Papke, Urszula Pasławska, Jacek Protas, Adam Ołdakowski, Michał Wypij and Zbigniew Ziejewski. Among the graduates are also people active in the institutions of the European Union, such as Robert Biedroń. In the world of entertainment, the vocalist and musician Piotr Sołoducha from the band Enej, the dancer and dance instructor Iwona Pavlović, the vocalist Julia Marcell and the writer Mariusz Sieniewicz stand out.
